The saga begins with the three brothers: Bharthruhari, Vikramaditya, and Bhatti. According to legend:

The most famous series involving a spirit (Betal) who tells the king a riddle-filled story while being carried on his back. If the king speaks, the spirit flies back; if he fails to answer when he knows the truth, his head bursts.

The brothers pleased Goddess Kali , who granted them a lifespan of 2,000 years each.
